When to Repair vs. When to Replace Your Air Conditioning System
One of the toughest questions to answer in the HVAC business is whether you should repair your current unit, or replace it with a newer model. The industry standard measurement of whether or not you should repair or replace is a simple equation where the cost of a repair multiplied by the age of the unit should be less than the cost of a new unit. New AC units are a big investment but are ones that will last you years! In addition, newer units are significantly more efficient than older models and will save you a lot on your monthly energy bill. In this way, new units often pay for themselves!
There are some telltale signs it’s time to replace your unit including:

Why AC Units with R-410A Refrigerant Are Superior
Up until 2010, air conditioner manufacturers used a refrigerant called R22. Now we know that for the average person, the difference between the R-22 and R-410-A may be trivial, but hear us out. In the 1990s, the EPA stated that this refrigerant is harmful to the environment and decided to begin the process of phasing it out. The newer R-410A refrigerant is much better for the environment and was implemented in 2015.
Having a unit that still uses the R-22 may significantly impact the cost of a repair job. If your R-22 unit is leaking refrigerant, the cost to repair will be exponentially higher than an R-410A. The costs of these repairs will only increase as there is a limited supply of R-22 refrigerant and a very high demand. All our HVAC experts recommend upgrading your current system to the newer 410-A models just in case something does go wrong.
Overall, most repairs can be avoided with proper care and attention. If you do notice anything wrong with your unit, don’t hesitate to call. Ignoring a problem may cause it to get significantly worse and may permanently damage your unit.
